World War 2 (context)
England declared war on Germany in September 1939 after Germany attacked Poland. Australia joined the war as England's Allies, to support England the mother country.
The allies had been fighting against Germany for more than two years when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour on the 7th of December 1941. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour coincided with their invasions of the Philippines, Malaya, Borneo, Manila, Hong Kong and Singapore. Australia now found its self directly in the line of a Japanese attack and withdrew troops from the middle east to protect itself. With England preoccupied with the war in Europe; Australia turned to the USA for support in protecting its borders.
